Wrea Green Horticultural Society
The Wrea Green Horticultural Society Show and Institute Beer Festival took place over the first weekend in September. The Show was held on the Saturday afternoon in a marquee in the Institute car park and attracted over 500 entries in fifty classes covering everything from carrots to collages and flower arrangements to floral paintings and doorstops. For the first time the Society awarded an RHS Banksian Medal to the person gaining the most points in the horticultural classes and this was won by Ray Pickett. It was very pleasing to see so many entries in the Children’s classes and there were also some stunning pictures in the Amateur Photography classes, whilst the standard of entries across the board was once again very high. A larger marquee and better weather than last year made for a really enjoyable afternoon for the hundreds of people who attended.
The Beer Festival started at lunchtime on the Friday and continued until Sunday evening with excellent live music on each day. There were 25 real ales available as well as a couple of ciders which all went down very well.
For the first time, there was also a Village Duck Trail and 40 households and businesses put in a lot of time and effort to create themed ducks to display in their front gardens over the weekend. This proved to be very popular with many people visiting the show and then following the Duck Trail.
The support that the Horticultural Show and Beer Festival have received over the last two years from the village, whether as exhibitors, sponsors, advertisers or Friends of the Show, has far exceeded the committee’s initial hopes and should enable both of them to become established events on the Wrea Green calendar. Thanks to everyone who supported the weekend and we look forward to seeing you in 2018 when the Show will take place on Saturday 1st September.
